Summary

In Muzaffarpur's Marine Drive, a road stretching five kilometres meant to ease the city's traffic has run into trouble after nonpayment of land compensation to 30odd families. The district administration had conceptualised this road as a subsidiary path connecting the busy Lakshmi Chowk to Rani Sati Temple. Construction and pitchlaying began in 2012 simultaneously with the land acquisition process. The 30 families, whose lands were acquired, were told they would receive compensation by the end of 2013. But the amount, totaling to INR 50 lakh, has still not been paid after eight years. In 2015, the people forcibly stopped construction work. The following year, the district magistrate ordered the resumption of work, but angry residents again stalled all work. It also led to minor scuffles between Public Works Department officials and the residents. In 2020, it was reported that the construction of the connecting road was still pending and that the case was in the high court. The district magistrate instructed the additional collector to ensure speedy execution of the project. On February 11, 2021, at a meeting of the District Project Monitoring Group, the district magistrate directed that the executive engineer and subdivisional officer will inspect the Lakshmi Chowk Path (Marine Drive) via Rani Sati Temple, Sikanderpur, and submit an inspection report to enable further action.
