Summary

In December 2022, Assam government began one of its largest evictions in Nagaon, near the birthplace of Vaishnav Saint Srimanta Sankardeva.

A total of 600 security personnel were stationed there to assist with the eviction when it began in the Santijan bazaar. The eviction was conducted on four villages.

Leena Doley, the Superintendent of Police in Nagaon, said, "After Santijan Bazaar, we will clear land in the Haidubi area, and depending on the time taken there, we will take a decision on carrying out the drive in the remaining two villages."

According to the local government, an area of 1200 bighas is slated for complete clearance.

In October, nearly 1000 households were served notices to vacate the land. Since December 13, security personnel have set up camps in the vicinity and have conducted a flag march.** **The district administration had issued an order under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which prohibits large gatherings.

Devananda Deva Goswami, ‘satradhikar’ or the religious and administrative head of Batadraba Than stated “Around 136 ‘bighas’ (45 acres) of our land which was earlier used for cultivation started getting encroached around 1986-87. When the BJP-led government came in 2016, they removed the encroachers.”

He further added “But while the land of the ‘Than’ is free of encroachment, there was rampant encroachment on nearly 900 ‘bighas’ of government land in our periphery. We are happy that action has been taken to remove encroachers. We want all illegal structures including religious ones to be removed from the area.”

In order to address the issue of illegal encroachments on Satras, which are Vaishnavite monasteries founded by Srimanta Sankardeva, the Commission for Review and Assessment of Problems of Satra Lands in Assam (CRAPSLA) was established in 2021.

CRAPSLA submitted an interim report in December 2022, and this eviction is believed to be the first action taken based on their findings. According to CRAPSLA's report, Satras collectively possess approximately 33,265 bighas of land, out of which 7,504 bighas are currently subject to encroachment.
