Summary

In January 2025, the Gujarat government halted a proposed 25 MW solar power project by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) near the Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary. This decision came after concerns from environmentalists and wildlife advocates about potential impacts on the habitat of the Asiatic lion, the species' last natural refuge.

A senior state government official, speaking anonymously to the Hindustan Times, stated, "After carefully evaluating the project's advantages and disadvantages at the highest levels of government, we have decided to withhold clearance and put the project on hold for now."

Initially, NTPC proposed a 60 MW solar installation within the eco-sensitive zone surrounding Gir, requiring 125 hectares of land. Facing opposition from wildlife experts and environmentalists, the plan was scaled down to 25 MW, covering approximately 40 hectares in Ghodasan village, a crucial corridor linking Gir to Girnar.

The forest department had previously denied approval for the project twice. However, under pressure from higher authorities, the project was reconsidered, leading to significant public outcry. Prominent conservationists, including former State Wildlife Board member Bhushan Pandya, and political figures such as Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani, voiced strong opposition, citing threats to lion habitats and increased human-wildlife conflict.

Critics accused the government of selectively enforcing environmental regulations, alleging leniency towards corporate projects while imposing strict rules on local communities. Aam Aadmi Party leader Pravin Ram highlighted this disparity, questioning the government's commitment to wildlife conservation.

In response to the widespread protests and potential for escalating conflict, the Gujarat government and forest department have deferred the Ghodasan solar project. NTPC is now exploring alternative sites outside the eco-sensitive zones to proceed with its renewable energy initiatives.

However, Jaipal Singh, the principal chief conservator of forest (wildlife) told the India Today that the solar farm proposal is still under consideration. He noted, "This solar park, if cleared, would be an exception. Even Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation (GETCO) had put out a requirement for creating sub-stations in the region, but we have pulled those back."

According to Bhushan Pandya, former member of the state wildlife board and a veteran wildlife photographer, "This project has been given a 'negative report' twice by the Gujarat forest department." He emphasized that conserving live corridors of wildlife movement, consisting of villages, farmland, and human habitation, is as critical as protecting notified forests and sanctuaries. "If this corridor is blocked, then it will become a 'captive wild' for the lions, like open-air zoos. This will lead to human-animal conflict, territorial fights, and in-breeding," added Pandya.
