Summary

Residents of Mallangkona in the West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya are opposing iron ore mining in the Chual Napram village. The villagers are concerned about the irreversible damage to the environment and water table as the drilling site is near the catchment area that supplies water to 24 villages.

On 23 May 2024, residents from 25 neighbouring villages, led by senior citizens and youth organisations, visited the site to inspect the large-scale drilling operations. The company's operators claimed to have permission for extracting iron ore, however, the villagers denied having any prior information or consultation regarding the drilling activity.

Upon enquiry by the villagers, the drillers failed to produce any permission but assured them that they would return with the necessary paperwork.

“When we contacted the prospectors, they said they had permission from the state and the mining department. However, other than one village headman, Madan Jira, who provided permission, the others were never consulted. This is a very serious matter and concerns the entire local population. We told them that we would not allow such a transgression in our area,” Enos G Momin, a local resident, told The Shillong Times.

On 27 May 2024, a large number of villagers gathered at the Mallangkona Outpost where the villagers demanded an immediate stop to all drilling activities.

The prospectors presented a composite mining license covering an area of 496 hectares for 50 years. One member of the Garo Students' Union (GSU), Aradonga unit, expressed their fears, stating, "If mining is carried out in our area for 50 years, we will have nothing to live on. Our children will have nothing to live on. The catchment we have for our coming generations will be gone, and no matter what they give us in return, we will not get back what we have lost in more than a century."

The prospectors assured the villagers of proper consultation with them in the future regarding the project, but the villagers remain adamant, stating that they would not acquiesce to the destruction of their land and environment.

The villagers plan to [file complaints](https://www.indiatodayne.in/meghalaya/story/meghalayas-mallangkona-residents-up-in-arms-over-iron-ore-mining-in-area-1015494-2024-05-27#:~:text=30 PM IST-,Residents of Mallangkona in the district of West Khasi Hills,Nonglang sordarship around their area) with various government departments, including the office of the Chief Minister and the mining and forest departments. They have pledged to intensify their protest should their grievances remain unaddressed.
