Update: On 24 July, the Supreme Court passed a significant order in the controversial #Haldwani railway land dispute, dealing with the rehabilitation of around 50,000 evictees of #Banbhoolpura area in the district.

The SC noted that 30 hectares of “encroached” land is crucial for station expansion and infrastructure. With thousands living there for decades, the court has directed the central and Uttarakhand governments to specify land needed for both railway activities and affected families.
But more importantly, the Supreme Court has asked the state and central government to work with the railway authorities to devise viable rehabilitation options for all the affected families.
Our state researcher @UrvashiMahtolia covered the land conflict which spurred massive protests in January last year, when eviction notices were sent out to 4365 households, most of whom were from the Muslim community. https://x.com/LandConflicts/status/1610841035068047363…
The initial identification of required land and affected families must be completed within four weeks, with a report and relevant documents submitted to the SC. The next hearing has been scheduled for 11 September, with interim directions remaining in place.
