The energy sector in India is the biggest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. In order to reduce the economy’s carbon intensity, India has set an ambitious target of producing 500 GW energy from renewable sources by 2030.

LCW’s database has recorded and analysed 25 conflicts caused by renewable energy projects. The findings suggest that all these conflicts were situated in rural areas, with common land involved in 80% cases.
Common land, collectively used and controlled by the communities for generations, is sometimes recorded as wasteland or government land in government land records. These records are often outdated and lack tenurial protection for these communities.
Our research revealed incentivisation of RE projects by the union and state government. These include exemptions in otherwise mandatory regulations like the Environmental Impact Assessments, land conversion and taxes, among others.
The study also found that the RE industry affected the local ecology and environment despite the union government’s claim that it is “practically non-polluting.”
LCW’s report suggests that policies should be framed for vulnerable stakeholders—communities and landholders. The transition to RE should be regulated and actualised sustainably for local communities and the environment. Read full report here https://landconflictwatch.org/all-publications…
