Summary

Rungta Mines Limited, a manganese and iron ore producing conglomerate, sought to take over private land area of 186.34 acres in Kamanda gram panchayat in Odisha.
The company sought to invest around Rs 2,000 crore in the project which would directly affect more than 1,000 people. Most of the area is forest land which calls for the consent of Gram Sabhas under the Forest Rights Act. On March 23, 2016, the Kamanda panchayat gram sabha rejected the move for land acquisition for the project as all the 400 members of the gram sabha unanimously voted against handing over of their land to the mining company. In the meeting, they accused the officials of Rungta Mines of land grabbing and forging Gram Sabha resolutions. They also highlighted and protested against the illegal construction of walls on both private and community lands, false promises of jobs and land grabbing activities engaged in by the officials of the company.
From 2019 onwards there have been plans of expansion, of the Rungta Mines in Sundargarh with a public hearing for expansion of the Kamanda Steel Plant being held on March 9, where it is reported that the management has agreed to the demands of the public and therefore got their nod.
