Farmers from the Loni Mandola village in Uttar Pradesh renewed their protest in November 2023 against the compensation for the land acquired from them in 2010 for a housing scheme.
The Housing Board of the Uttar Pradesh Government had acquired 26,040 acres of land in six villages in 2010 at the rate of Rs 1,100 per square metre. The farmers are now demanding that they be paid four times the current circle rate as per the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013.
The farmers have been protesting the unfair compensation since 2016 while preventing the Housing Board from acquiring the land.
Several rounds of talks have been held between the Housing Board officials and the farmers but there has been no resolution so far. While officials say that the rate they were offered was years before the Land Act came into effect and that 95 per cent of the villagers had accepted the compensation, farmers are holding their ground.
On 31 October, 2023, the farmers dug up the portion of land that was acquired from them for the Mandola housing scheme as they could not see any "solution is in sight".
As part of the project, a total of 11,000 houses were come up in Mandola. The Board, which started work in 2007, was slated to hand over flats in 15 years. The farmers’ protest has, however, held up the work.
