Summary

In 2014, the state government planned an 800acre township at Tubinakere, located between Mandya and Srirangapatna, to decongest towns and cities along the BengaluruMysuru corridor. The land, owned by small and marginal farmers, was considered to be suitable for the purpose according to late Housing Minister H.M. Ambareesh.  But the project has been at a standstill after facing opposition from land owners. Their main grouse is that the government had not informed them about the land acquisition process, and they have been protesting against the project intermittently since 2015. Alleging that Ambareesh, who was also the Mandya district incharge, was toying with their livelihood, the residents of Tubinakere staged protests outside the deputy commissioners office and raised slogans against the minister. On June 3, 2019, LCW made attempts to contact the Karnataka Housing Board Mandya district for information on whether the township was being developed but was unable to get a comment. LCW later contacted members of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangh in June 2019 for information on whether a township was being built in the area. Sources in Tubinakere village said that the location for the township was mostly an industrial space and that if there was a plan to build a township, the villagers were not aware of it just yet.  LCW also contacted the revenue head munshi of Mandya district regarding updates on the situation in July 2021 but was told that the current district officials would be unable to provide any information on the issue.
