In 2016, the Water Resources Department of the Madhya Pradesh government proposed to construct an Irrigation dam in Tetka village in Jaysinghnagar tehsil of Shahdol district in Madhya Pradesh. The project will require an investment of 13.85 crores and will supposedly benefit 320 farmers on at least 500 ha of land. However, 50 farmers will also lose 75 ha of fertile land. This is not the first time that the farmers of Jaysinghnagar will be affected. In 2013, lands of hundreds of farmers was submerged by Jhalamala reservoir. They alleged that now the remaining land will be destroyed by the Tetka dam. With this they will be left with no land. The farmers demanded that either the place of construction of the dam should be changed or, government or common land should be acquired instead of private land. The farmers lodged a complaint with the collector and commissioner demanding the change of place to a different site, which was ignored. In 2017, a person from Tetka village filed a petition demanding that the dam should not be constructed, if it is required to construct, it should be done on government land or common land. However, the court dismissed the Writ Petition on 23rd January 2017 citing lack of jurisdiction over executive functions of the State. In 2018, according to the Madhya Pradesh state Government report, the work was stopped due to water shortage in the river. Land Conflict Watch spoke to Santosh Agarwal, Madhya Pradesh state president of the Bhartiya Kisan Union on 18 July, 2020. He said that the struggle has been ongoing against the Tetka Dam. The Dam hasn't been built. The people haven't been given any compensation for their land acquired, yet. The farmers are worried because in another village in Shahdol division, the Bhadar Irrigation Dam was built in 2014. The dam lately has developed cracks in the Infrastructure, due to which it is not able to stagnate water and provide for irrigation. The villagers affected by Bhadar Dam are still awaiting the compensation for their acquired land. The farmers in Tetka fear the same fate.
