Summary

On 6 February 2025, small traders of Lake Chowmuhani Bazar staged a protest in front AMC Word 19 at Agartala against a planned eviction drive of the corporation, demanding an alternative space to continue their businesses. Despite their pleas, the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) carried out the eviction 20 days later without making any arrangements for their rehabilitation.

This eviction hit the livelihoods of many traders who had been there for years, leaving them without any support or rehabilitation. However, the AMC claimed that it was necessary to clear the area for a new road and that illegal structures were blocking public pathways.

Mayor Dipak Majumder defended the decision, asserting that the traders had been given prior notice to vacate the area but failed to comply. The Mayor said about 100 shops operated without licenses, and some traders built permanent structures on government land. He reiterated that unauthorised constructions could not be allowed to persist indefinitely.

In response, the affected traders plan to protest outside the AMC office, with the help of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) leaders, including former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar. Sarkar criticized the eviction, stating, “Those were temporary shops. After visiting the area, we found that they had demolished their shops and also looted materials. These traders should be provided financial support so that they could look after their families.”

The traders also pointed out that the BJP-led government’s policies had left them disoriented, exacerbating their financial hardships.

Opposition leaders, particularly from CPI(M), have condemned the eviction, stating it shows a lack of compassion for small traders. Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury called the government's actions inhumane, stating, “This government speaks about Viksit Bharat and Sushasan… Not only at Lake Chowmuhani market, but several people in many places across the state and the country are doing their business by erecting temporary structures on government land because the government failed to provide an alternative arrangement for them. We are not against development. But this is inhuman, and we shall raise our voice against it.”

Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha defended the eviction, arguing that it was necessary for the development of the area and should not be turned into a political issue, noting that similar actions took place under the previous Left government.
