Summary

In January 2022, a petition was filed in the National Green Tribunal (NGT) against the companies that were conducting mining and stone quarrying in Chinna Ravirala village and its surrounding areas. It was alleged that these activities were causing pollution to their agricultural lands.

The petitioners alleged in their application that they had filed several complaints to the Telangana State Pollution Control Board, district collectors of Rangareddy and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, mining and revenue departments. But no action was taken to stop illegal mining and pollution. Locals also complained they were facing health hazards too due to the dust pollution caused by the stone quarries.

The NGT ordered the formation of a joint committee to examine the ground situation. It consisted of officials from the regional office of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, State Pollution Control Board, State Mines Department, and State Level Impact Assessment Authority.

In April 2022, the joint committee submitted its report. It found that some of the companies operating in the area did not have the required permits. Individual reports submitted by the agencies in following months found some companies to be in violation of rules relating to prior environmental clearance.

In July, 2022, a public hearing was [held](https://tspcb.cgg.gov.in/publichearings/10.7 Ha. BNR Stone Crusher, Chinnaraviryala(V), Abdullapurmet(M), RRD- MIN.pdf) in Chinna Ravirala village in Ranga Reddy district of Telangana, in survey number 268 mining area. This was conducted to hear people's views about the proposed stone and metal quarrying project in the area.

Most people present in the hearing expressed their unhappiness with the pollution that was already being caused by stone crushing and mining activities in the area. Some people sought the compensation that was due to them in lieu of the land that was taken from for declaring the area as a mining zone be paid. They claimed they had been waiting for this since several decades.

In subsequent public hearings held in [November](https://tspcb.cgg.gov.in/publichearings/GMR Stone Crushers (10.076 Ha.) Chinnaraviryala (V), Abdullapurmet (M), RR Dist. - MIN.pdf) and [December](https://tspcb.cgg.gov.in/publichearings/Anantha Sai Industries Pvt. Ltd., (5.038 Ha.) Chinnaraviryala (V), Abdullapurmet (M), RR Dist. - MIN.pdf), 2022, residents of the area voiced opposition to the proposed along similar hearings. Referring to the pending NGT case on the matter, village residents also questioned the manner in which the public hearing was being held. Residents also pointed out the inaction of state measures for improving the public health that was being negatively impacted because of mining. However, there were others who mentioned they had no objections to it, but that the compensation due to them should be expedited.
