Summary

Over 5,000 families living in colonies built by the Gujarat Housing Board are living in uncertainty after receiving eviction notices from the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) due to concerns over dilapidated buildings.

In June, the VMC served eviction notices to 3,425 units in various Gujarat Housing Board colonies and 1,010 private structures, identifying them as "hazardous". The civic body warned residents of disconnecting water supply and drainage lines if the structures are not repaired. Residents say that repairs are "too expensive" and they have "nowhere to go" with the monsoon approaching.

The notices were served as part of the VMC drive to identify unsafe structures before the monsoon.

Niru Patel, a resident of Swatantra Sainani Housing Colony in Samta for over three decades, has undertaken repair work herself. "We've received three notices in four days threatening to disconnect water and drainage lines. When we bought these homes 35 years ago, we didn't know the construction quality was so poor. Residents are handling repairs on their own as there's no common committee to address this issue. I have nowhere else to go," she told The Indian Express.

The VMC has already disconnected water and drainage connections in 552 units in the Samta colony and in 625 units private units.

In January 2024, similar eviction notices were sent to 1,200 residents in a colony in the Himmatnagar locality in Tarsali. These houses were built built by the Gujrat Gramya Gruh Nirman Board some 40 years ago.

Residents had held demonstrations outside the VMC headquarters demanding redevelopment. Activist Kamlesh Parmar told The Times of India that the beneficiaries had paid their contribution for the houses. He added that they had even sought the state government's intervention. However, the VMC officials stated that houses will have to be vacated.

Meanwhile, BJP MP from Vadodara, Dr Hemand Joshi, on 19 June tweeted that Mayor Pinkiben Soni, MLA Balubhai Shukla, held a meeting at the Vadodara Mahanagar Palika head office to address concerns over eviction notices issued to approximately 5,000 families. Following which, officials of Gujarat Housing Board and VMC were asked to give residents enough time to secure necessary permissions for buildings which are completely dilapidated. They were directed to take necessary steps in cases where buildings may cause any loss of life.
