Over 2,000 landowners initiated a blockade along the National Highway 306 in Kolasib, Mizoram, pressing the government to settle the land conflict dispute in the area. Residents of Kolasib and the state government had been in conflict for more than three years due to the state forest department's decision to designate their lands along the National Highway as roadside reserved areas.
The Kolasib District Land Owners’ Association (KDLOA) claimed that the State Forest Department declared their lands within NH-306 and NH-6 as Roadside Reserve Forests, which resulted in freezing of their properties. The group insisted that the land in question belongs to them and has urged the authorities to cancel or repeal the 1965 notification that affects forested areas near roads. They also demanded the removal of restrictions imposed on land near the highway.
In a statement by James Vanlalringa, chairman of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Kolasib District Land Owners' Association, he explained that the blockade was initiated due to the government's inaction on their land ownership issue, which has remained unresolved for three years.
Vanlalringa stated, “We have decided to go ahead with our plan to stage an indefinite blockade on NH-306 at Sethawn after our meetings with the forest minister and officials yielded no results. We have been facing problems over ownership of our lands for the past three years after the forest department froze them. We have no option than to block the national highway to mount pressure on the government.”
The widening project of NH-306 had been approved by the central government, with the responsibility assigned to the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).
Police forces were deployed in the protest area to ensure public safety. It is reported that a few minor injuries occurred during a confrontation between the police and demonstrators.
A spokesperson for the Kolasib District Land Owners’ Association (KDLOA) announced that the protest was terminated after the government committed to resolving their concerns. Additionally, it was mentioned that the state government is taking steps in accordance with the Supreme Court's order to revoke the 1965 notification regarding the Roadside Reserve Forest.
