Summary

Nitin Thermal Power plant has proposed to set up a 1X660 mega-watt super critical coal-based thermal power plant in Rewa district. The company has already purchased about 2,025 hectares of private land in Jawa village and has requested additional land to construct the plant. The residents of the village, largely the Kol tribe, have raised objections, saying that the construction will cause environmental hazards and affect their livelihood. According to Jagdish Yadav, a resident of Rewa (based on the images attached), the project will impact 2,075 households and their livelihood. In its 72nd meeting of the expert appraisal committee (that advises government on developmental projects), the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, in 2013, extended the validity of the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the thermal project for a year (ToR includes the scope and limitations of executing the project on the site before giving a final environmental clearance). The project is yet to get statutory clearance. On July 18, 2020, Rajkumar Sinha of the National Alliance of Peoples Movement told LCW that the work has not commenced yet, adding there is a small group protesting against the construction of the plant.
