On 17 March 2025, Nagpur witnessed severe religious tensions and communal violence. The incidents were triggered by a rally called by right wing organizations: Vishwa Hindu parishad and Bajrang Dal, demanding removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's tomb.
During the rally, a mob burned a blanket with religious inscriptions that was being taken to a 'dargah' by Muslim devotees, triggering communal violence. Several incidents of arson, including damaging of multiple vehicles, were reported. In the violence, 33 police personnel were injured.
The next day, the police filed multiple FIRs against leaders and participants from both the communities. However, Fahim Khan and Yunus Sheikh belonging to the Minorities Democratic Party were named as main conspirators and charged under sedition. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation then decided to demolish the houses of the two accused.
The corporation claimed that the houses had illegal extensions. Following which, the two accused filed a plea in the Bombay High Court and demanded a stay of the demolitions in line with Supreme court order against bulldozer justice. The petitioners alleged that the notice stated that the municipal authorities would start within 24 hours and didn’t give the families of the two accused any time to respond.
The next day, the civic authorities arrived with multiple JCBs and police protection at Khan’s house and demolished his two-storey residence, spread across 86.48 square metres, citing unauthorised construction. Officials also removed an illegal structure part of the residence of Yusuf Sheikh.
Soon after the Bombay High Court heard their pleas, the court halted further demolition of homes.
