In December 2021, residents of Humhama protested the demolitions being carried out by Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district administration as part of its anti-encroachment drive.
The Tehsildar (a district administrative official) of Humhama had issued a notice to around 1700 households of the area to vacate the land.
Residents told media, "Our property land was taken by the government for construction of airport, though compensation was provided for same, however, many residents of the area were left with no land, so they constructed their houses on Kahcharai. Now the government is asking them vacate this land and have started demolition drive for the same."
Kahcharai refers to the tax that is levied on individuals who graze their livestock on certain lands in Jammu and Kashmir. Kahcharai lands are in other words, grazing lands. The residents said their acquired lands should be returned to them, if the government forces them to vacate the land.
A protesting resident said that even though they met Assistant Commissioner revenue Budgam, he, however, asked them to go to the court as he cannot do anything. LCW tried to contact the Budgam administration officials, but did not receive any response from them.
