In Agartala, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and the Tripura Tea Workers’ Union (TTWU) protested against the unlawful destruction and encroachment of tea garden lands. The protesters alleged that the BJP government were supporting illegal destruction and land grab.
Under the leadership of Manik Dey, president of the CITU Tripura unit, a rally began in front of the CITU office in Agartala and moved through various streets of the city.
According to Manik Dey, these tea gardens hold historical significance, dating back to their establishment during British rule. However, their future has been put at risk due to a series of troubling developments. Reports suggest that vacant land within tea estates has been converted into rubber plantations. While some leaders resisted these moves during the Left Front Government, the situation escalated as laws were introduced, allegedly facilitating the encroachment.
Dey further condemned the allocation of tea garden land for purposes not permitted by law. He further remarked that several tea estates had already been taken over under the pretext of setting up nurseries.
One particular accusation involves a minister reportedly attempting to transfer ownership of tea garden land through formal procedures. Resistance from the landowners was reportedly met with the use of bulldozers to clear parts of the estate. In Mohanpur, land was allegedly taken under the pretext of building a Naboday school, and there are claims that soil was forcibly extracted from the Thalachhara tea garden as well.
These incidents have sparked outrage among local communities, who are demanding immediate action to restore the affected lands and repair the harm done.
