Summary

In January 2025, farmers in Gujarat's Gir Somnath district reignited their protest against the proposed Kodinar-Somnath railway line. This 27-kilometre broad-gauge project, initiated by Western Railway in 2015, aims to connect Chhara port and necessitates acquiring approximately 206 hectares of fertile land across 20 villages, directly impacting the livelihoods of numerous farmers.

The project first faced significant opposition in 2019 when authorities issued a land acquisition notification, prompting farmers to submit around 4,000 objection petitions. Despite meetings with officials, including the Railway Minister and the District Collector, no concrete action was taken, leading to the notification's expiration without progress. Farmers believed the project had been shelved, especially after similar protests in 2020 resulted in its suspension.

Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and the then Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had assured that the project would be dropped in a joint presentation, according to a report by the Bhaskar. However, tensions resurfaced recently when railway officials commenced land surveys without prior notification, under police protection. This move has reignited fears among farmers of losing their fertile land, which they depend on for cultivating crops like coconut, mango, groundnut, cotton, and grains. They argue that the railway line, primarily benefiting industrial units, would disrupt their livelihoods and the region's agricultural productivity.

In response, farmers organized protest meetings, including a significant gathering near Mahabaleshwar Mahadev in Vadodara Jhala village of Sutrapada taluka. During these meetings, they reiterated their willingness to escalate protests if their demands are not met, emphasizing their slogan, "We will give our lives but not our land." They proposed converting the existing Veraval-Talala-Prachi-Kodinar meter-gauge line to broad gauge, which they believe would support local tourism, particularly benefiting the Sasan Gir area, and minimize disruption to agricultural lands.

In January 2025, farmers from over 30 villages of Veraval, Sutrapada and Kodinar talukas submitted a petition to the District Collector opposing the proposed Veraval-Kodinar-Chhara railway project.

The farmers also express environmental concerns, noting that the construction could obstruct natural waterways, leading to flooding during monsoons, and disrupt local wildlife habitats. Despite presenting these issues to the administration multiple times, they allege that no action has been taken, fuelling their anger and resolve to oppose the project.

As the situation develops, the farmers remain steadfast in their opposition, urging authorities to reconsider the project's implementation in favour of alternatives that would preserve their land and livelihoods.
