Summary

In March 2022, farmers of Abhava village in Surat protested against the Khajod Urban Development Authority’s (KHUDA) plan to expand the Surat Airport. On January 19, 2022, KHUDA had issued a notification of provisional reservation of 700 acres of farming land at Abhava village for the expansion of Surat airport. The farmers demand the complete withdrawal of the provisional reservation.

KHUDA’s Airport development plan will affect 300 farmers, 90% of whom are small farmers and stand to lose their means of livelihood because of the proposed land acquisition. Land from this region was also acquired previously for the airport in 1989 and 1999._ _The farmers have submitted a memorandum to the collector and chief officer of KHUDA on behalf of the farmers, and protests were held outside the collector's office with slogans and various banners on February 28, 2022. The farmers allege that the land acquisition decision was taken without a survey, and they have raised the demand for withdrawal of the reservation under the KHUDA Draft Development Plan Report of 2039. The draft plan has reserved lands from Abhava, Bhimpore, Gaviyar and Sultanbad villages for the Aerodrome complex.

On 1st June 2022, the Ministry of Civil Aviation released a press release stating, “Airports Authority of India (AAI) is extensively working towards the holistic development of the Surat airport with a project cost of Rs 353 Crores.” As per the statement, “The development project includes an extension of existing terminal building from 8474 square metres to 25,520 square metres. After completion of the project, the new state–of–the–art extended terminal building will be capable of handling 1200 Domestic and 600 International passengers’ during peak hours, making the annual passenger capacity of 2.6 Million.”
