Summary

A notification by the government regarding a new railway track has ignited protests in 15 villages of Olpad and Choryasi talukas in Surat. The proposed track is a freight railway line connecting Gothan to Hazira, where the Adani Hazira port is located. The lands of more than 200 hundred farmers are likely to be acquired for the project.
The affected farmers have demanded that an existing broad gauge goods railway track line from Kribhco to Gothan be extended to Hazira, and no new land acquisition should be done for the project._ _The farmers are also upset that the government has repeatedly been acquiring land from their villages for various developmental projects. They worry that if this acquisition trend continues, there won’t be any agricultural land left in the region, and there won’t be any means for their livelihood. There are also no government companies among the Hazira-based companies that will benefit from this acquisition. Khedut Samaj Gujarat president Jayesh Patel aired these concerns to the media while stating, “We don’t understand why the government wanted to acquire farmer’s land to give facilities to the multinational companies like Adani, AM/NS, Reliance, etc. [when] There is an existing railway line between KRIBHCO company to Gothan.”

The farmers also submitted a memorandum to the State Agricultural Minister, Mukesh Patel, who held a meeting with the District Collector on  March 1, 2022. He suggested to district collector to explore the possibility of acquiring 30 meters of land adjacent to the existing railway line so that farmers will be minimally affected by the land acquisition. But as per the Surat District Collector, they cannot use the existing line of KRIBHCO and ONGC as it will not fit into the Dedicated Freight Corridor.

On March 11, 2022, the affected farmers protested outside the Surat District Collector’s office and handed a memorandum requesting that their land not be acquired for such a project. As per the Officials at the district collectorate, the Gujarat Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (G-RIDE) is developing the project to connect Hazira port with the Mumbai-Ahmedabad-Delhi railway line of the Western Railway. The railway line project is not yet finalised and is on hold because of the protest by farmers. The final decision on the railway line is still awaited.
