Summary

In 2012, the Central Water Commission granted in-principle consent to four major irrigation projects in the Narmada Valley, including the 15-megawatt Chinki Multipurpose Dam near Pipariya village in Narsinghpur district. The project is proposed to irrigate 89,029 hectares of land in Narsinghpur and Raisen districts. It will submerge more than 8,000 hectares of land and displace 49 villages in Narsinghpur and Jabalpur districts.
Residents of the 49 villages have objected to the dam as they fear poor rehabilitation and resettlement as in the case of other Narmada projectsIt, such as Upper Narmada, Raghavpur, Rosara, Basania and Bargi dam projects.
The project was stalled and there has been no active resistance since 2016, according to local activists.
In May 26, 2020, the Power Finance Corporation signed an agreement with Narmada Basin Projects Company Limited to fund projects worth INR 22,000 crore in the state. It includes the Chinki Multipurpose Dam, which is expected to be revived after the grant of funds.
