Farmers in Gujarat's Tapi district are still waiting for compensation for their land that was acquired acquired for the construction of National Highway No. 53. The farmers have not been compensated despite a High Court order mandating payment.
The highway, connecting Surat to Dhulia, was completed in 2009.
On 14 October 2024, farmers submitted a petition demanding compensation to the Tapi District Collector. During a public gathering, farmers also reiterated their demand for compensation, highlighting their worsening financial situation due to the long delay.
Congress MLA from Vansda, Anant Patel, who has been actively supporting the farmers, joined them in submitting a petition to the Tapi District Collector. Patel emphasized that the farmers’ condition has become dire, as they have been unable to acquire new land to sustain their livelihoods. The petition mentioned that some farmers have even resorted to suicide due to the financial burden they face. If compensation is paid promptly, farmers can buy new land and continue farming, which is their only means of survival, Patel said.
Mukesh Gameet, a farmer affected by the land acquisition told ETV that despite a Gujarat High Court order on 23 August 2023, directing authorities to pay compensation with interest, the National Highway Authority and the Collector’s office have not processed the compensation yet. He added that farmers are determined to launch a vigorous protest if their demands remain unmet.
Anant Patel further criticized the government, alleging that bureaucratic excuses are being used to avoid paying compensation. "The Collector and land acquisition offices are part of the same government machinery, yet they have not resolved this issue. It’s time for action, and if the farmers do not receive their rightful dues soon, we will organize a protest," he declared. Patel’s statements have further raised concerns about potential unrest if the farmers’ demands continue to go unaddressed.
