Summary

In 2013, the Maharashtra government's Maharashtra Industrial Development corporation (MIDC) decided to acquire 1700 ha land for Phase III Industrial development in Satara. MIDC had earlier acquired 311 ha land for Phase I and 320 ha in phase II development from farmers of Khandala tehsil. Some were still not compensated for the acquisition of their land. Earlier the farmers from the region had to give up their land for the Krishna Khore irrigation project in the early 1990s. Some farmers also had to give up their land for highways and state rehabilitation projects in the last decade. For the Phase III acquisition, many farmers resisted to give up their land. The farmers are concerned over the rehabilitation as the land that will be acquired comes under the command area of the Neera Devghar Irrigation project. In January 2019, farmers from Ahire, Morve, Shivajinagar, Mhavashee, Khandala, Bavda and Bhade from Satara district marched to Mumbai for 10 days to put forward their demands. They were stopped by Police in mankhurd, from where a 6-farmer delegation marched to put forth their issues before Industries Minister Subhash Desai. The farmers threatened that if their demands were not met, they will commit Jal Samadhi (mass suicide by drowning) in Nira river in February 2020. Later speaking to the media, Minister Desai assured that the farmers will be given alternative land. He added that the farmers who were not compensated for Khandala Phase I will be given 15% of developed land under Khandala Phase II. Those who raised objections wont be forced to give up their land. Additionally, land coming under the Neera Devghar irrigation project will be omitted and farmers will be compensated with land for the acquired land. He also promised that jobs will be given to locals in the Khandala Industrial Zone. However, the protests continued into July 2019 while the land acquisition is underway.
