Farmers of 15 villages in Palanpur area of Gujarat's Banaskantha district have opposed the proposed land acquisition for a bypass road to alleviate the escalating traffic congestion at Aroma Circle.
The government proposed to acquire 100-metre wide land for the 25-kilometre Palanpur Highway Circle Bypass. However, this initiative threatens the livelihoods of approximately 50 farmers. Opposing the move, the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) on 2 April 2024, submitted a grievance letter to the Collector, urging a reduction in the land acquisition width to 30 meters.
Meanwhile, BKS leader for Banaskantha, Mavjibhai Loh, highlighted the disparity in land acquisition between projects has fuelled discontent among local residents and stakeholders. He pointed out that the six-lane Bharatmala project road from Gandhinagar to Dhanera necessitated only a 60-meter wide land for acquisition, whereas 100-metre wide land has been proposed for the Palanpur bypass.
In the letter, the organisation requested the Gujarat government to reduce the proposed land acquisition for the bypass so that the affected farmers can use the remaining land for animal husbandry to sustain their lives.
During a protest, farmers said that the initial proposal suggested a plan to build a 30-metre wide road, which would have affected farmers in 10 villages. However, the Roads & Buildings (R&B) Department contended that no prior map was prepared for the project.
Loh warned that farmers would stage protests if the government fails to make decisions in the farmers' best interests.
An estimated budget of Rs 380 crore was approved for the bypass.
In August 2024, leaders from 15 affected villages convened in Khodal village, Palanpur, and issued a stern warning to initiate a protest if their demands were not met. The farmers are not against the bypass road itself but are contesting the government’s move to acquire 60 meters to 100 meters of land when only 30 meters is needed. They argue that the excessive land acquisition will unduly impact their livelihoods.
According to a report by the Bhaksar, the farmers allege that the initial survey targeted land from 1,200 farmers across 10 villages, which was subsequently canceled. A new survey was then conducted, reportedly favouring builders and politicians, resulting in the acquisition of land from 2,000 farmers spanning 20 villages. This new survey also encompasses 700 borewells, further exacerbating the farmers' concerns.
Aniketbhai Thakar, MLA of Palanpur, acknowledged the farmers' grievances, stating that while they do not oppose the bypass road, they believe too much land is being taken. He assured that efforts would be made to find a fair solution and that the issue would be presented to the government for resolution.
