Summary

In February 2023, the Assam government launched an eviction drive to remove illegal encroachment from 1900 hectares of land in the Char-Chapori area of the Burhachapori wildlife sanctuary. The Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra covering 44.06 Sq Km. It is around 40 Km south of Tezpur town and 180 Km east of Guwahati.

The district administration of Sonitpur and Nagaon asserts that large areas of government lands in the region have been unlawfully occupied by encroachers, and had been served a notice to vacate the land a month in advance.

A majority of the affected households had already left their homes on receiving the notice, but a few of them were in the midst of doing so when the eviction drive began. Encroachers could be seen packing their goods into tractor trolleys while bulldozers were stationed at their house. Firoza Begum a resident of the area claimed that the eviction began before the date stated by administration for the purpose.

The eviction drive was conducted in the Char-Chapori districts close to the Burhachapori nature sanctuary using 50 excavators and 30 tractors. In order to prevent any unfortunate incidents while the anti-encroachment drive was underway, more than 2000 security personnel—including paramilitary, home guards, CRPF, and Assam police—were posted in the region.

The Deputy Commissioner of Sonitpur Deba Kumar Mishra stated "We discovered that this area was never surveyed and people were in confusion if their villages fall under Nagaon or Sonitpur district. That is why government schools, Anganwadi centres, mosques and other structures were built by people who thought it is Nagaon district." He added that in order to ensure that welfare and education programmes are not compromised, schools and other government organisations would be joined to similar centres nearby on un-encroached property.
