An INR 250-crore coal excavation project called Sonepur Bazari Open Cast Mine of Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) was approved by the state in 1995. The project gets its name from Sonepur and Bazari villages in the Pandaveswar block. For the first phase of this project, ECL acquired land from the residents of five villages but did not provide the rehabilitation package it had promised and shifted the villagers to an area where they could not meet even their basic needs. At least 3,669 families were to be rehabilitated. According to the ECL website, the rehabilitation of families from Bhaluka, Kuchberia, Basakdanga, Bandghat, Arsola and Sonepur started in 2014. However, rehabilitation of over 2,000 families from Bhatmura, Bazari, Madhudanga, Nabagram and Shankarpur villages is still pending and is expected to be completed in eight to 10 years. For the second phase of the project, ECL plans to acquire land from 3,665 families in Ruidaspara, Hansdiha, Punjabidanga and Bheladanga villages. More than 10,000 people are likely to be displaced. On October 3, 2016, members of 15 families who have not got compensation and jobs in accordance with their demand sat on hunger strike in front of the office of the general manager of Eastern Coalfields Limited in Pandaveswar. The ECL authorities have reportedly said that the families could not be issued offer letters due to some technical difficulties. As per the latest update, Villagers held a protest in front of ECL Area Office in Sonpur Bazari in July 2020. Their complaint is that they have not yet been properly rehabilitated. They are not getting Water and electricity. They have also not received the paperwork for their rehabilitation.
