On 12 February 2024, homes of nearly 400 people residing in JJ basti near Azadpur Mandi Line in Delhi were demolished by the Delhi Development Authority, citing illegal encroachment by 'basti' dwellers.
The demolition drive was carried out as a part of development project's clearance drive which aims to construct a parking lot for the Mandi to de-congestion of the area. In 2021, the Delhi Municipal Corporation had finalized a blueprint for a commercial and residential complex in Azadpur at an estimated cost of Rs 2,900 crore.
Residents protested against the demolition drive and stated that they have been living there since more than four decades and the 'basti' was even listed in the DUSIB list until recently. There have been raise concerns over DUSIB removing certain bastis from its notified list.
The residents also complained that the notice given on 10 February 2024 had no date or signature of the authority. This gave them no time to vacate their houses. They further complained that the demolition drive hampered the education of many children as most of the study material was destroyed and many were not able to go to give their exam.
They are now asking for basic amenities like toilets, electricity, and rehabilitation to a decent place. The case is still pending in the court.
