Summary

More than 2,000 dairy owners in Meerut are protesting against the citys municipal corporation and district administration after they **(1) *failed to find land on the city outskirts for the dairy business. Speaking to LCW, Pravesh Tyagi, an affected dairy owner, said the tension with the district administration started in April 2019 when it forcefully evicted the dairy owners following the orders of the Allahabad High Court. The court had passed an order to shift dairies out of city limits in 1998, but the local authorities could not implement it as they failed to identify the required land. "The court order noted that dairy owners should be given land for the dairy business. Its been 20 years, but no land has been given to us in Meerut. However, land has been provided to dairy owners in other cities, including the state capital Lucknow, Tyagi told LCW. He added that the administration has tried all tricks. They threatened the dairy owners, took away their milch animals and slapped monetary fines. In May 2019, they started registering FIR against the dairy owners, as a result of which at least 500 dairies were permanently shut in the city. There were about 2,200 registered dairies operating in Meerut, but now the administration seems to be in no favor of us running our business smoothly," he said. Lokesh Khurana, a social activist and advocate who is representing the dairy owners in the court, said* he was** hopeful of getting respite from the court as the district magistrate himself is guilty of contempt of court for not obeying its orders. When contacted by LCW, Anil Dhingra, the district magistrate of Meerut, said that the dairies are operating in the city illegally against the orders of the Allahabad High Court and that he cannot comment much as the matter is in court. When asked if the land has been identified for the dairies, he said that the work is under progress.
