Bangladesh has objected to the construction of a modern electric crematorium intended to serve the 40,000 residents of Mohanpur district. According to sources, the project was approved in 2021 after Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath, who has represented the Mohanpur constituency for 31 years, raised the issue with then-Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb.
Construction commenced following the approval, and 70% of the work was completed before Bangladesh raised its objection. The Mohanpur constituency, located close to the zero line along the India-Bangladesh border, has much of its township and market areas in proximity to this boundary.
According to the border agreement between the two nations, any new construction within 150 yards of the zero line requires permission from Bangladesh. The protest is based on a rule that prohibits pucca structures within 150 yards of the international border.
An official from the Mohanpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s office said, “The project has been stalled since the objection was raised, leaving it incomplete.”
Following this, building had to be stopped before the electric oven could be set up. Although this occurred in 2022, despite Ratan Lal Nath's relentless efforts, neither the Indian government nor the state governments have taken any action to finish the construction.
Ratan Lal Nath stated, "There is nothing left to do unless the Indian government moves forward with solving the problem; regrettably, the people in my constituency are suffering; I am waiting to see what happens in the coming days."
