In January 2025, Cinnamara tea estate workers started an indefinite protest against the government's move to earmark 200 bighas of the land for a tourism project. Launched by the Assam Tea Corporation, the project has caused concern among the workers, who are worried about potential job cuts and increased exploitation.
Balram Kondhai, a member of the Assam Tea Mazdoor Sangh, stated, “A year ago, we were verbally informed by the administration about the 200-bigha tourism project at Cinnamara Tea Estate”. He added that a memorandum was submitted by the Sangh to the Chief Minister through the Jorhat District Commissioner where they raised their opposition to the project.
Kondhai said “We clearly stated that if the government proceeds without consulting us, we will protest. Yesterday, without any notice or discussion, work began on the land. This has forced us to start an indefinite protest. What will we do if we lose the garden? This garden has fed us for generations.”
The protesters alleged that the tea workers had been used for vote banks. Kondhai added, “If the tourism project goes ahead, hundreds of workers will lose their jobs. The government should focus on improving our living standards instead of taking away our livelihood.”
The workers voiced their anger over the looming threat of displacement and the suspension of transfers and promotions within the tea garden community. With many families already facing financial hardship, the situation has only added to their distress. Another worker said, “We want work. We have children to feed, and we need the garden to ensure jobs for the next generation. The number of unemployed in our community is growing because the government has stopped our transfers and promotions.”
Further fuelling their frustrations is the construction of temples within the garden area. The worker added, “We’ve seen temples being built on tea garden land. But those temples won’t put food on our plates. Our survival depends on the tea gardens.”
The tea workers have insisted on an immediate stop to the tourism project and have urged the government for a dialogue.
