Another boundary dispute erupted between Assam and Nagaland in May 2024 after police personnel from the neighbouring state entered the Longtsiri village under the Wokha district of Nagaland.
Seven Assam Police personnel with semi-automatic weapons intruded into the Lotha Naga settlement area, purportedly to oversee construction works within the Disputed Area Belt (DAB). They ordered to stop construction of a building claiming that it fell under the DAB.
Villagers opposed this unauthorised entry and affirmed their rights to the territory, which led to an altercation between the villagers and the Assam police officers. The villagers also warned that they would not be held accountable for any action taken towards people entering into their territory without a legitimate authorisation from the Assam government.
The Gaon Bura of Longtsiri village claimed that the Assam authorities had not sent them any notices or information beforehand. The villagers' protest forced the Assam police personnel to leave the area.
The villagers further expressed their fear and concern, claiming ongoing harassment from the Assam police, and they urged the Nagaland government to step in and look into the matter. One of the village residents stated, “The Nagaland government should set up a Nagaland Armed Police (NAP) post here. Due to bad road conditions and poor electricity, water problems, the police are unable to come and stay here. So I request the government to look into such matters at the earliest.”
On 10 May 2024, MLA and Chairman of Bhandari SDPDB, Achumbemo Kikon, visited Longtsiri village, accompanied by OC Changpang, Border Magistrate Bhandari, Commandant 7th NAP Bhandari, and SDPO Bhandari to assess the situation. Kikon claimed that the Lotha Naga ancestral territory included the foothill area inside the Kakatanga forest.
Kijon said, "The recent intrusion perpetrated by the Assam Police is, in fact, illegal and a clear violation of the 1972 Agreement between the two neighboring states". The Government of Nagaland and the Government of Assam's 1972 interim agreement states: “Any land in Kakatanga forest which was already in occupation of the Nagas wherever they may be shall not be disturbed during the period of this agreement.”
The MLA further issued a caution that any further such attempts by the Assam police would be a “breach of peaceful coexistence and shall not be tolerated in any manner.”
