On 9 September 2024, several families of Rongpur area in Silchar staged a protest on the national highway in Silchar, Assam, expressing widespread anger over evictions carried out by the Cachar District Administration.
The evictions, being carried out as part of the Bharatmala project to construct a four-lane highway connecting Silchar to Manipur, has displaced hundreds of families residing on government land in Rongpur Part 1 and 2.
The evictees gathered at "Zero Point" of the East-West Corridor near Madhura Bridge to submit a memorandum detailing their grievances to Agriculture Minister Atul Bora. However, the minister's convoy passed by without addressing the protesters, which angered the protesters further.
In response, the protesters blocked the national highway, demanding immediate compensation.
“We will shed blood if necessary, but we will not leave our homes without compensation,” a resident [told the media](#:~:text=The eviction%2C reportedly executed to,without prior notice or compensation.).
The affected residents, many of whom had been living on the land for years, claimed that their cultivated lands, known as zirat, were destroyed without fulfilling promises of compensation made over a year ago.
“We have been living here for a long time, and the eviction was carried out without any alternative arrangements,” said an evictee. Many residents expressed their frustration, stating they would not vacate their homes without receiving the compensation they were promised.
The blockade was lifted only after the administration assured the protesters that their concerns would be addressed. However, the families maintain that they may escalate the protests if their demands are not met soon.
