Summary

In 2016, the government of Andhra Pradesh proposed the Amravati metro rail project. The metro project would need 31 hectares of land which would include government land of 1.5 hectares and private land of 29.44 hectares. At least 77 families are likely to be affected by the project. The cost of acquisition is estimated to be 750 crores and resettlement and rehabilitation cost is expected at Rs. 46.73 crore.

However, the Farmers of Nidamanuru and building owners at Karl Marx Road (Eluru Road) have opposed the land acquisition. Farmers say that they don’t want to lose their lands for the Metro Rail Project. The residents also question the need for the project. They are unhappy because the government compensation will offer them only one-fourth of the market rate for their land.
The villagers from Poranki, Kanuru, Bandar Road and Eluru Road requested officials not to acquire land in their villages during the gramsabha meeting. Nonetheless, the government went ahead with the acquisition.

However, with the change in the government in 2019, the project has been redesigned to bring down the cost. In a meeting with officials in September 2019, Chief Minister YS Reddy suggested to take over the land on lease. Finalising on this, the government has released Rs 187.40 crore of lease amount to the farmers of Amravati.
