Summary

As the construction of the first phase of the Ahmedabad Metro rail project gets underway, the homes and commercial establishments of 1,047 families in Ahmedabad are expected to be affected. A merchant establishment in Revdi Bazar, which has 455 shops and additional 68-odd illegal extensions, is one such market complex to be affected.
The merchants say that nearly 5,000 square metres of their total 10,000-square-metre land would go into the project and associated road deduction. The project involves the acquisition of 89.81 hectares. Of this, 84.65 hectares is government land and 5.16 hectares private. A total of 1,047 properties will be affected, out of which 548 are residential, 351 commercial and 144 residential-cum-commercial. The remaining one is an industrial establishment. About 36 additional structures that are likely to be affected include 11 religious structures.
The Social Impact Assessment study undertaken by Metro-Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad Company Limited (now called Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited) offered a Resettlement and Rehabilitation package to rehabilitate the affected individuals at six different locations. Those losing homes would be given 50 square metres of built-up-area at a residential building (if a legal title holder) and 36.5 square metres of built-up-area (if a non-legal title holder) or cash in lieu of house if opted.
However, the traders have demanded that the 60-year-old market be relocated to 10,000 square metres of land at an open mill land nearby. They claim that the Union government had given this plot of land to the Sindhi settlers after Partition and that they have been in the wholesale business for decades and are now on the verge of losing their clientele and livelihoods.
The Revdi Bazaar Traders' Association has sent four reminders to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation about the issue. On January 1, 2018, Naroda MLA Balram Thawani led a delegation of 50 Sindhi community members, including those from Revdi Bazaar, to meet Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
After two years of lull, the construction picked up in March 2021. The first phase is set to roll out in August 2022. The market is yet to be relocated.
