In an effort to reduce human-wildlife conflict, the Assam government conducted a large-scale eviction drive on 24 September 2024 in the Bandarmatha Reserve Forest, located in the Lakhipur Range of Goalpara district. This reserve is one of three in the area, alongside Nalbari and Kumarkali.
Approximately 450 families, totalling around 2,000 people, were evicted from 55-60 hectares of forest land. Many unauthorized structures, including houses, mosques, and a facility under the Jal Jeevan Mission, were demolished using bulldozers.
The eviction was carried out following a directive from the Gauhati High Court, which ordered the clearing of all protected forest areas in Goalpara district. Goalpara Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Tejas Mariswamy stated that notices had been issued to residents earlier in the month, encouraging them to leave voluntarily.
Goalpara has experienced frequent human-elephant conflicts, reportedly the highest in the country. Officials attribute much of this conflict to encroachments on forest lands, which disrupt elephant habitats. "On average, 25 people lose their lives in man-elephant conflicts. If we want to reduce this conflict, one main solution is to clear all illegal settlements from our forest areas," Marswamy told the media.
Following the eviction, authorities plan to initiate an afforestation drive over the reserve’s 118 hectares to restore it as a suitable habitat for elephants and further reduce human-wildlife conflicts.
This Goalpara district authorities had conducted nine similar drives in the past year across Goalpara, reclaiming approximately 550 hectares of forest land from alleged illegal occupants.
