The viral video of a cameraperson stomping on the bullet-ridden, lifeless body of 33-year-old Moinal Haque, sent shock waves across the nation in September 2021. Two villagers were killed and 20 injured as the situation turned tense during an eviction drive for the Gorukhuti Multipurpose Agricultural Project in Assam's Dhalpur. Among those evicted was 65-year-old Asir Uddin, who had moved to Dhalpur 40 years ago after losing his 7.5 bighas of land to the Brahmaputra river. Amid criticism, the government promised to compensate the displaced families with land. Two years later, the project appears to have failed and thousands of homeless people continue to languish in squalid temporary shelters.
