“They want to take away all of our land, they won’t leave anything,” said Saif Ali, adding that his faith in the law has weakened after the annulment of Roshni Act that left its beneficiaries, like him, vulnerable. Saif Ali and his family's ancestral home was demolished in January 2023 by the Jammu Development Authority. Ali's family once owned 12 acres, they now fear losing the remaining 3.35 acres of land. A law that the Jammu & Kashmir government passed to confer ownership rights to occupants on state land to raise funds for power projects has left locals, like Ali, in fear of losing their land.
