In a bid to reclaim railway lands, the Railway Department in Assam's Sarupathar undertook a large-scale eviction drive on January 6, 2023. According to officials, the drive resulted in the eviction of over [100](https://www.pratidintime.com/latest-assam-news-breaking-news-assam/golaghat/assam-railways-eviction-drive-sarupathar#:~:text=The Railway Department in Assam's,lands in Golaghat district's Sarupathar) illegally established shops and businesses. As per other estimates a total of [17 families and 71 shops](https://www.sentinelassam.com/north-east-india-news/assam-news/massive-eviction-drive-carried-out-on-railway-land-in-sarupathar-631876 /) were removed during the operation, which was jointly conducted by the Railways and the administration of the Dhansiri subdivision.
Evicted families of Sarupathar town had appealed to the subdivision administration and the Railway authorities to temporarily halt the operation, stating that they would vacate the land voluntarily at their own expense.
Railway officials, however, justified the eviction, stating that it was necessary for the engineering work related to the construction of a double-lane railway track. This eviction drive follows Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's assertion in December 2021 that eviction drives to reclaim government and forest land across the state would continue unabated. Chief Minister Sarma made it clear that all individuals, regardless of religious affiliation, must vacate encroached land, urging them to comply voluntarily or face eviction.
