Land Conflict Summary

On June 16, 2023, the Assam government carried out an eviction drive on agricultural lands in Arunudoi Sonowal Village, located in Namfai of Jagun, which prompted a protest by the All Assam Sonowal Kachari Students Union along with members of other organizations. The eviction drive is part of ongoing efforts by the Assam State Government to reclaim government lands that are allegedly being illegally occupied by encroachers.

A group of protesters gathered at the entrance of the Margherita Circle Officer's office on June 19, 2023, to express their opposition to the eviction of agricultural land. They organized a rally and marched from Margherita Rangamancha to the Circle office.

The protesters also submitted a 4-point memorandum to the Circle Officer via District Public Relations Officer. The memorandum outlined these demands: an immediate halt to the eviction, the organization of a meeting between the administration and representatives of the Sonowal Kachari community, a complete halt on giving land to other groups until the land-related issues are resolved by the affected people and taking care of the well-being of livestock that has been adversely impacted by the eviction. The protesters made it clear that if their demands are not met, they will intensify their protests in the future.

One of the protesters stated, "On June 16, the Assam government abruptly evicted the residents of Namphai Arunodaya Sonowal village. The villagers were forced to leave without any prior notice, despite having been recognized as flood-affected victims in 1999 and provided with land by the government. It is deeply unfortunate and disheartening that the same Assam government is now attempting to evict the indigenous people of Assam."

It is worth noting that the individuals residing in the area had been settled there during the tenure of the previous government. Subsequently, a confrontation between the local residents and the authorities occurred during the eviction process. However, the situation was eventually brought under control.
