In Gujarat's Rajula and Jafrabad talukas, villagers have strongly opposed the government's decision to allow Indo Asia Copper Limited (IACL) to set up a copper refinery and a fertiliser plant in Amreli.
The proposed plant is set to be the largest in Gujarat, having the capacity to produce 10 lakh tonnes of copper and 16.5 lakh tonnes of fertiliser annually. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 15,689 crore.
On 13 March 2024, the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) organised a public meeting in Lunsapur village on the grant of clearance to the proposed factory. During the meeting, some people hoisted banners and raised slogans against the plant. They even threw chairs which were arranged at the venue. Following which, the police detained 11 individuals, who were released after the hearing was over at 2:30 pm.
Several farmers and environment lovers expressed concerns about water and air pollution as the company proposed to use old technologies for smelting copper and manufacturing fertiliser. They also raised concerns over its impact on wildlife.
According to a report by The Indian Express, the draft environment impact assessment (EIA) report submitted by the firm to the GPCB, the site of the proposed project is 26 km away from the boundary of Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary — the world’s last abode for Asiatic lions. The EIA report mentioned evidence of lion movement near the proposed site during their study.
A day before the public hearing, a group called "Rajula Copper Hatao," consisting of farmers and environmentalists, submitted a letter of protest to government officials.
Meanwhile, another group expressed support for the factory citing job opportunities and economic benefits.
