In 2014, the then chief minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, had laid the foundation of a mega food park project in Mandya district. The project, aimed to be completed in 2016, was supposed to generate 4,000 jobs. Additionally, it sought to aid the local farmers by eliminating the middleman and building a link through which farmers could get fair remuneration for their produce.  But there were delays in the land acquisition process carried out by the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB). The state, through a Government Order (GO) in April 2012, approved 300 acres of industrial land for the proposed mega food park, out of which 129.03 acres were allotted by KIADB in April 2014 under Phase 1. In October 2020, KIADB allotted additional 38 acres, making a total land allotment of 167.04 acres. Necessary procedures, such as issuing final notifications, were allegedly never completed during the process of land acquisition. Farmers have also complained of receiving delayed payments of compensation. Moreover, there have been claims that no rehabilitation was planned in the project on account of the park being spread over a farmland. As a result, the project cost has escalated and the deadline for opening the park has been extended. As of January 2021, the project proponents have submitted the Terms of Reference and are awaiting the required environmental clearance.
